Honoring Our Heroes: Celebrating Veterans of the USS Orleck
This Veteran’s Day, the Jacksonville Naval Museum proudly honors the decorated service members who served aboard the USS Orleck, a vessel that holds a cherished place in American naval history. We take a moment to recognize the courage, leadership, and dedication of four remarkable Commanding Officers who led the Orleck’s crew and set an inspiring example for all who followed.
As the USS Orleck’s first commanding officer, CDR John Douglas Andrew set a high standard of leadership that defined the ship’s early days. Following his dedicated service during World War II, CDR Andrew took command with a steadfast commitment to excellence, guiding the Orleck through its inaugural missions. His leadership earned his crew’s respect and paved the way for the ship’s future achievements.
Taking command from CDR Andrew, CDR Homer Howard Nielson carried forward the Orleck’s mission with vision and dedication. Known for his strategic insights and strong rapport with his crew, CDR Nielson’s tenure solidified the ship’s readiness for peacetime operations. His decorated service highlighted his skill in navigating complex naval operations and his unwavering commitment to his country.
CDR James T. Lay’s tenure brought further distinction to the Orleck. A seasoned leader with a decorated record, CDR Lay focused on advancing training and operational readiness. His leadership during this formative period underscored the Orleck’s role in maintaining post-war security and readiness, and he is remembered for fostering a strong, cohesive team.
During a period marked by Cold War tensions, CDR Thomas Chapin Buell brought a calm but resolute approach to the Orleck’s command. Known for his tactical expertise, CDR Buell guided the Orleck through challenging missions, earning him recognition for both bravery and strategic acumen. His leadership during this critical time underscored the Orleck’s legacy as a vessel of resilience and honor.
