USS Orleck Onboard Exhibits

Jacksonville Naval Museum

Step aboard the USS Orleck and embark on a journey through time, where the echoes of naval legends whisper in the salty breeze and the stories of valor and sacrifice come alive. Each corner of this magnificent Gearing Class destroyer unveils artifacts that reflect the rich tapestry of maritime history, celebrating not only our local heritage in Jacksonville but also the broader saga of naval warfare across the globe. As you explore, you’ll encounter interactive displays and engaging narratives that make history accessible and exciting for all ages.

Korean War Trainbusters

The USS Orleck proudly holds the distinction of being the charter member of the Korean War Train Buster Club, having successfully destroyed two North Korean supply trains in 1952. In tribute to this significant mission, we created a commemorative video using insights from various books along with a firsthand account from Roy Yater, which has been prominently displayed on the bridge where the operation was coordinated. We were also honored to welcome the son of an Orleck crew member who served aboard during that mission, and he generously shared a copy of the certificate awarded to his father and fellow crew members for their service.

Russian Submarine Encounter

Our newest exhibit, the Russian Submarine Encounter, is located in the Combat Information Center or CIC. This immersive holographic display details a realistic encounter between a U.S. Navy Carrier Battlegroup and a Russian submarine during the Cold War. The CIC simulates the ship in action, conducting Anti-Submarine Warfare operations, complete with red lighting, sweeping radar repeaters, and the sonar stack alongside the underwater battery fire control system prominently showcased. A holographic officer narrates the intricate events that unfolded during operations against a potentially hostile submarine.

Mount 52 Experience

Our Mount 52 Experience is fully operational and has received outstanding feedback from our guests. This immersive experience features a captivating video enhanced with dynamic lighting, rich soundscapes, and realistic vibration effects, all designed to give viewers a thrilling glimpse into the functionality of the gun mount. The experience is set against the dramatic backdrop of an actual mission undertaken by the USS Orleck during the Vietnam War on October 28, 1968, allowing visitors to engage with history in a unique and impactful way.
