Weathering the Storm: The USS Orleck and Its History with Hurricanes

The USS Orleck, known for its storied past as a Navy destroyer, has not only faced battles at sea but also weathered the forces of nature. As Hurricane Helene approaches, we must temporarily close the ship for the safety of our visitors and staff, marking another chapter in the vessel’s long-standing history with inclement weather.

This is not the first time the USS Orleck has been forced to close due to a storm. Since its relocation to Jacksonville, the ship has braved numerous weather challenges. During the active Atlantic hurricane seasons, closures and necessary precautions are a reality that we prepare for each year. From tropical storms to full-blown hurricanes, the ship’s sturdy construction and our team’s dedication to preservation have always ensured that it weathers the storm.

The USS Orleck has survived significant storms throughout its history, none more dramatic than Hurricane Laura in 2020. As the Category 4 hurricane battered Lake Charles, Louisiana, the Orleck was ripped from its moorings and carried a mile up the Lake Charles River. Despite the devastation surrounding it, the ship remained upright, a testament to its resilient design. Although the area suffered catastrophic damage, the Orleck’s survival symbolized strength amidst destruction.

Earlier, in 2005, Hurricane Rita also left its mark on the USS Orleck. The ship sustained damage during the storm, highlighting the ongoing risks that hurricanes pose to such historic naval vessels. These experiences reinforce the importance of ongoing maintenance and protective measures to ensure the Orleck remains preserved for future generations.

With Hurricane Helene approaching, we are again preparing for potential impacts. Starting Wednesday, September 25, the USS Orleck will be closed to the public as we take necessary precautions. For the latest updates on closures and reopening, please visit www.jaxnavalmuseum.org. Our team will provide timely information on when it is safe to return to tour the ship and experience its rich history.

We appreciate your understanding during this time and encourage everyone to stay safe as the storm passes. We look forward to welcoming you back aboard soon
