A few weeks, ADAMS Supporter Joe Cooner was asked why he was fired up about The ADAMS Museum.  Here is what he had to say:

“When asked if I would make a statement on why I am excited about the USS CHARLES F. ADAMS (DDG-2) coming to Jacksonville as a museum ship, the first thing that crossed my mind was “IT’S PERSONAL!”  And then I thought I should explain that statement.

I am excited about the possibility of the ADAMS returning to the Jacksonville area and Florida in general for several reasons. I look forward to this possibility with a sense of pride.

First, I am former ADAMS crewman (1972-1974).

Second, I was stationed twice in Mayport, Fla., which is where the Adams was home ported for over 21 years. The first time was on the Charlie Deuce and the second time on the staff of Commander Cruiser Destroyer Group Twelve, where I retired from the Navy in 1979.

Third, I am originally from North Florida.  I was born in St. Augustine and went to school in Palatka. I first joined the Navy in 1957 in Jacksonville. I am also a descendant of Pioneers of Florida who settled North Florida, and specifically this area. As such, I look forward to the economic and educational possibilities the ADAMS can offer my home area.

I have been associated with this endeavor since February 2008 when I contributed my first $100 and joined the Adams Class Veterans Association (ACVA).  I have made other contributions since, along with contributing my time and expertize.  I currently volunteer my time at the ADAMS Visitor Center at The Landing in Downtown Jacksonville and have volunteered at other JHNSA functions and ADAMS reunions. I plan to continue my support, even assisting in making her ship shape again when she gets here.

Since there is no city, state or federal government contributions of any kind to this effort, I urge anyone reading this to follow me in helping support bringing the Adams back by whatever means possible for each of you. Whether monetary, volunteering time or expertize or just communicating to others about the Adams project.  Every little bit helps.

With community support I will once again be able to walk up her gangway, salute the flag and the quarter deck and proudly say “Request permission to come aboard Sir”.  Then I will walk the decks and remember and hopefully pass those memories on to those who wish to visit her as Florida’s first Museum Ship.”
