LT Orleck Remembrance Ceremony

On September 13th at 1300, the USS Orleck will host a special ceremony to honor the courageous actions of Lieutenant Joseph Orleck, after whom the warship is named. This heartfelt tribute will be led by Retired Captain Greg Allen and will commemorate the day LT Orleck made the ultimate sacrifice in his brave efforts to save his warship on September 9th, 1943.

The ceremony will begin with the reading of eyewitness accounts, detailing the events surrounding that fateful day. These poignant words will bring to life the bravery, dedication, and leadership displayed by LT Orleck in the face of great danger. Following this, a reading of the USS Orleck’s deck log from its commissioning on September 15, 1945, will remind attendees of the proud naval history that this remarkable warship carries.

This gathering also serves as a moment to reflect on the warship’s transformation over the years. After serving in both the U.S. and Turkish navies, the USS Orleck has now become a floating museum, preserving stories of service and sacrifice. Events like this ceremony allow visitors to connect with its past and honor the legacy of those who served aboard her.

After the readings, attendees will participate in a cake-cutting ceremony to celebrate the commissioning anniversary of the USS Orleck. This symbolic gesture serves as a reminder of the warship’s storied history, its crew, and the spirit of the Navy.

The event is open to all visitors touring the USS Orleck as part of regular admission.

Whether you’re a military history enthusiast, a veteran, or simply a local looking to honor a piece of naval heritage, this ceremony will be a meaningful experience. Join us aboard the USS Orleck on September 13th to pay tribute to LT Orleck and celebrate the legacy of the warship he inspired.
